Marine 316 stainless steel
Grade 316 stainless steel is the standard
molybdenum-bearing grade. It is excellent in a range of
atmospheric environments and is generally more resistant
than grade 304.
316 tends to be regarded as the standard “marine
grade stainless steel”. It also has excellent
weldability.
Grade 316 is an incredibly versatile material,
so as a result it has a wide range of uses…
Boat fittings
316 stainless has an extensive range of uses
covering everything from tubular fabrications like boat
hand rails, pushpits and pulpits, conventional and soft
closing stays and hinges, handles, latching systems,
marine fasteners, adjustable feet and casters to
mechanical and magnetic catches, drawer slides, locks,
brackets and boat shelving systems, making them the ideal
choice for marine use

Type 316 stainless steel is a molybdenum-bearing
grade. This gives better overall corrosion resistance
properties than type 304 and higher creep strength at
elevated temperatures.
Type 316 gives useful service at room
temperature in sulphuric acid of concentration of lower
than 15% and higher than 85%. It also resists chloride
attack and therefore is often selected for use in marine
atmospheres.
Type 316L with its .03 maximum carbon content is
used in applications where it is not possible to anneal
after welding and where maximum corrosion resistance is
required.
The fatigue strength is considerably increased
by carburizing and marine stainless steel products with a
thick case exhibit longer fatigue lives than examples
with a thin case.
