Hulls decks and bulwarks
Boat Hull Construction
Basic yacht hulls are a carcass. Pre-formed
parts accurately produced are required to assemble boat
bulkheads to boat keels. Sequence is
important.
Once the main yacht hulls framework is completed
the bulkhead edges are chamfered to provide full-width
seating for the planks. This prevents warping and
difficulty in fitting decks to yacht hulls.
After rubbing down and varnishing the planked
decks, the next step is the fitting of the boat decks to
the boat hulls.
With the main deck glued in place, the next
stage is to put the deck fittings in place.
The first planking operation is fairly
straightforward. Planks are laid progressively towards
the keel, fastened at each bulkhead position. Planks
should follow, as far as possible, their natural run and
also, sit fully across the edges of the boat
bulkheads.
This provides a sound surface for the
application of the second planking later on. Thus,
cosmetic appearance of the first planking is not of major
concern. It is important however that the ends of the
planks be angled and carefully fitted.

The ears of the bulkheads are cut off and cut
flush to the level of the decks. Deck planking is
finished working from the centre out towards the
bulwarks. The planks at that point needed shaping to
conform to the shape of the hull.
