Power and Battery Management Systems

begins with the battery. Unless the battery bank is of the right type and capacity no charging system will compensate.

For small yachts this may mean just one battery that both serves to start the engine and to power the on board electrics. This set up will probably require either a charger using shore power, or where the yacht is on a mooring, a small wind generator/solar panel. Typically this might be 65AH (Ampere Hours).

The larger yacht will have a battery bank consisting of two or more batteries, usually wired through a switch so that they can be used independently, together or isolated. These battery banks are usually in the range of 130AH to 280AH. It is common practice for one battery to be reserved for engine starting and the other(s) for a domestic supply.

The latter should always be of the 'deep discharge type' capable of recovering from a relatively prolonged, steady drain, such as is the case on an overnight passage, which might have involved the autopilot, VHF, and berth lights as well as the navigation lights.

Whilst not strictly necessary, it is very common for the engine battery to be of this type so that the two are truly interchangeable and so that they will be properly matched if used together. Here it is worth pointing out that using a 'good' battery in parallel with a 'poor' battery will not produce an average of the two. The poor will pull the good down to it's own level.

The analogy with water is useful when considering 12 volt systems. In the case above, it is readily seen that linking a full tank to one that is leaking will soon have the full tank down to the level of the leaky one.

Power management consists of deciding what size of 'tank' or battery bank will fulfill the likely demand and how and at what rate that tank will be replenished. It is no bad thing to list the power draw of all electrical items on board and then consider a 'worst case' scenario, of which might be used simultaneously, and plan the battery size and chargers accordingly.

However for most yachts the space constraints limit the extent to which bigger or extra batteries can be fitted and the engine alternator, the only means of charging independently of shore supply. It is mainly for these owners, who want something extra to help 'top up' their existing battery situation, that the solar panels and vertical wind chargers will be of most use.

The larger yachts, or those who live aboard, will usually want fridges and other such luxuries, and will have battery banks in excess of 300AH They will need to consider combinations of all kinds of generating capability, especially the propeller type wind generator.

HPX

Musto clothing's HPX fabric range features the GORE-TEX© Ocean Technology© membrane and is universally recognized as the most durably waterproof and breathable fabric available in the world today, ideal for long ocean or offshore cruising and racing.

The fabric allows moisture vapour from inside the suit to "breathe" out, whilst stopping any sea or rainwater getting in. This is achieved by having microscopic holes in the membrane, large enough to let water out, but much too small to let water droplets in.

Incorporated into the HPX Jacket and Smock is Stretch HPX fabric which is exclusive to Musto. Stretch HPS uses a stretch GORE-TEX© Ocean Technology© membrane in a three layer laminated fabric. This revolutionary fabric has an elasticity of 30%. The result is the least restrictive, most breathable fabric for foul weather gear available.

MPX

MPX GORE-TEX© products use a lighter version of the GORE-TEX© Ocean Tachnology© membrane that is used in the HPX garments. Laminated between inner and outer materials, it creates an extremely durable, waterproof and highly breathable fabric.

Breathable One Design

Another range of breathable fabrics are hydrophillic fabrics that transfer water vapour from one side if the fabric to the other through a chemical process. This process is helped by a pressure difference, which drives the water vapour from the high pressure inside the clothing system to the low pressure outside. While not as efficient or as durable as GORE-TEX© fabric, hydrophillic fabrics do offer a lower price point.

Breathable waterproof fabrics have taped seems, thus making them fully waterproof for coastal, inshore and dinghy sailing, as well as onshore use.

Breathable Inshore

Breathable Caribbean and Windward Range

The Breathable Windward and Caribbean Range goes from strength to strength in terms of it's popularity. Whether it's a summer regatta or cruising amongst the palm-fringed islands, it offers a perfect combination of protection, breathability and practical features. It even packs small for maximum convenience!

The Windward and Caribbean Range is made from lightweight ripstop polyester fabric that has a breathable hydrophillic coating. The Jackets are taped making them windproof and fully waterproof.

The only difference between the two models is that the Windward styles sport a microfleece lining, whilst the Caribbean styles are mesh lined

MUSTO 3-Layer System

More and more yachtsmen and women are benefiting from the Musto yachtsmens clothing 3-Layer System. Whilst the concept behind it is simple, the fabric technology makes use of the most efficient materials available.

Here's how it works. Water transmits heat 30 times faster than air. This means that wet skin gets cold 30 times quicker than dry skin. Ocean sailing is as gruelling as it gets, and "The Volvo Ocean Race" is the toughest Ocean race in the world. Gill clothing chose race winner illbruck to help develop the OC Racer Jacket and Trousers by testing it whilst training and competing.

The OC Racer Smock is a new addition to the Ocean range, also made from Gill's 5 Dot™ fabric offering the ultimate in ocean protection. Gill took all of the key elements of the OC Racer Jacket and created the Smock, adding features such as latex neck and wrist seals and a Riri Storm™ zip to minimise the possibility of water ingress, even in the most extreme conditions.

The Smock has been part of a two year development programme, tested accross the Atlantic in the "2003 Transat" by Jacques Vabre and "The Transat 2004" by Conrad Humphreys.
