Liferafts

IT IS CRUCIAL THAT ALL VESSELS are equipped with the lifesaving gear appropriate to their sailing conditions. Liferafts should survive the roughest seas, are designed to maintain body heat, stay afloat, avoid capsizing, and inflate quickly. They should be tethered to the yacht by a painter. In an emergency the crew throw the liferaft overboard and tug on the painter, which releases carbon dioxide from a pressurized cylinder and inflates the raft. Once aboard, the crew sever the painter, release the drogue (sea anchor), examine their emergency pack, and hope that they soon sight land or another ship.

Liferafts have battery-operated liferaft lights, inflatable archtube supports, Ventilation chutes. Liferafts are made of calendered nylon fabric for maximum air retention and resistance to weather in the upper half, welded to the independent buoyancy tubes. The tubes have to be able to support the full complement of personnel with stability, and have a double floor for body heat retention. Reflective strip is used to maximise visibility.

All new liferafts supplied by Mayday Marine come with a 12 year warranty, 3 year service intervals, made to a cruiser or offshore standard. Options are 4, 6, 8 or 10 person, Valise or Canister, although upgrades are available.

Liferaft Hire

Mayday Marine Liferaft Hire service offers an extensive range 4, 6 or 8-man Offshore liferafts, which can be hired from a minimum 4 days to a maximum 12 months.

Liferafts are supplied with a survival pack which conforms to RORC. Typically this consists of paddles, storage bags fishing kit, drogue or sea anchor, bailer, rescue quoit and line, raft repair kit, patches and glue, flares, drinking water, torch and batteries, sun signalling mirror and first aid pack. We can hire liferafts for code of practice operations up to SOLAS B.

Lifejackets

Seago Child's Lifejackets - This automatic Seago Harness Lifejacket is specifically designed for children, so they no longer have to wear the traditional foam lifejacket whilst on board. Seago Olympic Hammar with Harness are all new harness lifejackets from Seago. Automatically inflate using the Hydrostatic hammar system, which operates by water pressure on the hydrostatic valve, so they only inflate when fully submerged in water. Mayday Marine service personnel are all fully trained to service many types of liferaft. We can service liferafts up to 12-man in size. We service liferafts that conform to the following standards R.O.R.C. liferafts, Offshore liferafts, Transocean liferafts, SOLAS B (code of practice).

Upon unpacking of the liferaft, it is inflated and pressure tested for one hour. After passing the test, the liferaft is inspected using our own comprehensive checklist. Once the inspection and pressure tests are completed, the Emergency pack is checked, to make sure such things as flares, sea-sick pills and other items which have an expiry date are checked and changed if necessary. The cylinder is also weighed and hydro-tested as required.

The liferaft is then deflated and repacked into either a canister or valise. A copy of the Liferaft checklist and new certificate is then issued.
