Advanced Generator Technology from Fischer Panda

Fischer Panda generators are your first choice for mobile and marine power applications where size, weight, quietness and ease of use are critical issues. The two markets where these issues are of real importance are marine and specialist vehicles. Fischer Panda generators are compact, light, quiet and very efficient, being at the forefront of power generation technology.

Fischer Panda AC Generators

The heart of the Fischer Panda AC technology is the asynchronous alternator. Designed and produced by Fischer Panda for over 30 years, the design of the alternator allows for highly efficient water cooling of the copper windings. These are mounted on the stator as opposed to conventional synchronous designs where they are mounted on the rotor requiring either brushes or slip rings to transfer the developed electrical power. In an asynchronous design the rotor is a virtually indestructible permanent magnet and comes with a lifetime guarantee. No other alternator design can match the efficiency of the 100% water-cooled Panda alternators.

Fischer Panda DC Generators

DC generator alternators are slightly different from the AC versions. The primary voltage developed by the alternator is fed through to a rectifier assembly where it is rectified to the required DC voltage. When an electrical load is applied to the generator, heat is generated within the rectifier assembly and not the alternator windings. Therefore Fischer Panda can water-cool the rectifier assembly and the tiny amount of heat built up in the windings can be dispersed by the engine combustion air. The design of the soundproof capsule ensures the air is pulled through the alternator before passing to the engine air intake, thus maintaining the generator’s soundproof integrity.

Fischer Panda have pioneered the technology behind DC generators for over 15 years. By the application of patented permanent magnet alternators and fresh water cooled rectifier assemblies, they are able to deliver soundproof diesel generators with any DC voltage required, in a range of generator outputs from 4 kW (typically at 12, 24 or 48V) up to 150kW. (Typically 96V+)

The onset of smart inverter-chargers enables a DC generator to be offered as a sensible solution for any power generation system. The Victron Multi-Plus inverter/chargers enable all AC consumers on board to be run from the batteries. The MultiPlus operates automatically as a charger when shore or AC generator power is available and as an inverter when mains power is not available. The AC power available from them is limitless due to their paralleling capability.

High-efficiency battery charging with a variable-speed diesel generator is advantageous to the designer and/or operator in a number of ways:-

An AC generator selected with an output of say 10kW would be grossly over-rated and would run at full load condition for probably less than 5% of the day and at very much part load for the remaining 95%.

A DC generator output in kW is not selected to cope with peak demand. It is selected based on an average demand. This means in real terms that instead of having a 12kW AC generator a 6kW DC set can be used.

A 6kW DC generator set to operate on automatic battery sensing mode, would run only when the domestic battery bank voltage drops to a preset lower level, nominally 11.2 Volts for a 12 V system, and run until the higher charge level is reached, this is nominally 13.8V for a 12V system. The power consumption and the power generation are thus effectively divorced from one another, the battery bank in these cases acting as a “reservoir” of power.

The obvious benefits for DC power generation systems are:

· Smaller generators

· The generator only runs in a loaded condition

· No need for load banks

· Lower generator running hours

· Less fuel used

· Less maintenance costs

· Lower environmental impact

As with all Fischer Panda generators, the ergonomic, stainless steel soundproof, capsule is designed for easy access to all major components with traditional refinements such as external oil drain and a secondary anti-vibration mounting system.

The majority of Fischer Panda generators use fresh-water cooled Kubota diesel engines. The generators are configured to run between 2000 and 2800 rpm producing nominal power outputs between 4.0kW and 150kW. An auto-start Panda iControl panel with graphic display of all operating pressures, temperatures and fault diagnosis comes with each generator.

Generator Configuration and Construction

An air-cooled synchronous alternator requires large amounts of air flowing in and out of any soundproofing arrangement. This requires extra space in the capsule and is a source of noise breakout as can be experienced with many of Fischer Panda competitor’s products.

Efficient cooling of the alternator means that the Fischer Panda soundproof capsule can be designed to be completely sealed.

All Panda engine-alternator assemblies are mounted on resilient mounts and housed within a sound insulated capsule. The complete generator is then installed on external resilient mounts. This “double rafting” ensures that vibration from the generator is kept to an absolute minimum.

This arrangement has been perfected over 30 years of production to provide the very best solution in terms of compact, unobtrusive on-board power. Requiring only the minimum space, correctly installed, the Panda generator will operate practically un-noticed.

Diesel Engines

All Fischer Panda generator prime movers are water-cooled diesel engines selected from world-class manufacturers such as Farymann, Kubota, Yanmar, Mercedes Benz and Deutz.
