Bow thrusters and stern thrusters

The lower the tube in the water, the better the performance. Recommended minimum is 140mm from waterline to top of tube. Nobels are recommended for long tube installations - easier to reach the prop.

It is worth considering that as installation cost is a substantial part of fitting a bow thruster irrespective of HP size, it is often wiser to pay a little extra to have more power. Furthermore, smaller motors under heavy loads give less operating

time, and can be ineffective.

Account must be given to boat design and the natural elements. A shallow draft long narrow boat on a canal will require less HP to move the bow than a boat with

deep keel or high topsides, such as a power boat with flying bridge, against strong tides and winds.

Hydraulic models, if driven from main engine, must have sufficient HP at idle.

Installing batteries near to electric models reduces power loss due to voltage drop, overheating of expensive cables and allows adequate accessibility for servicing and ventilation due to possible battery gas emittance when charging.

An electric Bow Thruster is to be used intermittently to save overheating. Overheating cables can be protected by fitting a circuit breaker.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

SELECTING YOUR BOW THRUSTERor STERN THRUSTER

Cutting costs on size and installation materials can adversely affect performance and the warranty.

Coupled with the boat’s engine and rudder system bow and stern thrusters give total manoeuvrability for all occasions and conditions, enabling you to cope with any situation in safety and with confidence.

A Bow Thruster can be an essential piece of marine

equipment for today’s pleasure boat owner. Whether it be on

restricted inland waterways or entering crowded harbours, all

the elements are present with varying tidal currents and

hostile weather conditions to make things more difficult.

Possibly turning a simple manoeuvre into a hazardous

situation. Fitting a Bow Thruster enables you to cope with

these conditions in safety and with confidence.

Waiting to dock or simply mooring is a pleasure too,

particularly if you are short of crew. Narrowboat owners, even

the most conservative, are quick to appreciate their value for

making going astern easier. Steer from the bow!

A bow thruster is a motorised propeller unit

mounted to a transversally incorporated tube in

the boat’s bow, fitted as low as possible in the

hull. It is either electrically driven, normally low

voltage and preferably by dedicated batteries, or

hydraulically, especially on larger vessels, by its

off the main engine if capable.

Coupled with the boat’s engine and rudder system it gives total manoeuvrability.

NOBELS BOW & STERN THRUSTERS

Since 1968 Nobels have produced and supplied over 25,000 units worldwide.. In fact

they are very popular with canal boat builders due to their rugged and reliable construction, particularly when the thruster is not easily accessible when fitted in a long tube.
